.hack was more than just an anime. It was a cultural phenomenon that transformed the way an entire generation looked at the world around them. This wildly-successful franchise offered us all the chance to escape. Thanks to .hack, we no longer had to be normal. We could delve into The World in search of adventure. We could run dungeons, collect treasure, and lose ourselves in virtual labyrinths. Each new installment was a melding of future and past where the rules of reality no longer applied. .hack was our ticket to the wired world, and we couldn’t wait to log in. Tsukasa awakens inside The World, an immense online RPG filled with monsters, magic, and mayhem. When he discovers he’s unable to log out of this mysterious game, he joins forces with a colorful group of characters and begins a desperate quest to find his way back to real life.

In my review, I will be brief and to the point. You may say that.hack/SIGN is the “original” of the genre of anime about people who are trapped within electronic games. Though it has a similar premise with recent anime,.hack/SIGN is not a “shonen action show” in the traditional sense. You may think of it as a psychological drama if you like, as it follows regular people as they interact with one another in “THE WORLD,” a virtual world.

The drama centers on the interpersonal interactions and human drama of its protagonists. What sets.hack/SIGN apart from other recent anime with a same premise is the series’ emphasis on making its protagonists seem like flesh-and-blood individuals facing genuine challenges. In that regard, anticipate tons of exposition and extensive speeches throughout the series as these individuals strive to answer the major mystery (why is the main character imprisoned in this game) while also examining the challenges and motives of each one separately.

Action, humour, and rapid plot development are all lacking. This show is sluggish, but that’s not always a negative thing. There is no better show out there if you want to follow a compelling story. In.hack/SIGN, there is a lot of thought-provoking content worth absorbing at your own pace. The show has an excellent music that perfectly complements the tone, and the animation is surprisingly competent for its age.

In conclusion,.hack/SIGN is a fantastic game that you should play. The show is a cerebral one that will test your mental abilities. It has fantastic audio and visuals (early adopters of the 90s art style will love it) but what truly matters is that it respects your intelligence and treats you like an adult. Everyone feels human, everyone has their concerns, and everyone has their own motives; you will never feel your hand is being held, and there will be no “good” against “bad” comparison within characters. This is the best program ever if you like slow, thought-provoking dramas.
(If you’re interested in the backstory, you can find a wealth of information online;.hack has a fascinating history!)
