If I were to give GIII a fair chance and evaluate it entirely on its own merits, without holding it against any other films in the franchise, I’d give it 3.5 stars.
Many viewers have been too critical of the picture, in my opinion, because of inevitable comparisons to the first two installments (arguably two of the greatest films ever made). Unfortunately, this is to be anticipated in a trilogy. There seems to be one trilogy that everyone agrees is the weakest in the bunch (die hard 2, pirates 3, alien 3, matrix 3, etc).
Overall, I like the film and found it amusing, with superb performances (apart from Sophia lmao poor girl gets slaughtered in reviews), an engaging story arc, and just one instance when I wished Coppola had done a better job of wrapping things up. That’s why I gave it a 3.5.
Finally, let’s not overlook the fact that 1990 is often regarded as a landmark year in cinema. Both critically and commercially successful films are included.
Itemizing them randomly: A few of my all-time favorite films include: Goodfellas, Edward Scissorhands, Total Recall, Days of Thunder, Ghost, Dances With Wolves, Die Hard II, Hunt for Red October, Rocky V, Dick Tracy, Internal Affairs, Robocop II, Predator II, Back to the Future III, Home Alone, Driving Miss Daisy, Close Up, and Back to the Future III. Actually, that’s not even all of them; haha, I was just reading over the list from 1990.
