Newly Mastered in HD from a 4K scan! Thought-about by most to be among the finest, if not one of the best serials of all time. Three circus stuntmen observe down a ruthless madman often called 39-0-13 (Charles Middleton, Emperor Ming of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe), bent on destroying the wealth and integrity of his former employer, multi-millionaire Horace Granville (Miles Mander, Homicide, My Candy). 39-0-13 kidnaps and imprisons Granville, impersonating him as a way to facilitate his deeds of destruction. Cy Feur s (Dick Tracy vs. Crime Inc.) pulse-pounding rating sharply accentuates the crisp course of William Witney (Sundown within the West) and John English (Adventures of Captain Marvel). Chapter One s cliffhanger an underground tunnel flooded by a large mountain of torrential water is a traditional! Starring serial star Charles Quigley (The Crimson Ghost), Bruce Bennett (Darkish Passage) and the gorgeous Carole Landis (I Wake Up Screaming).

Among the 17 successive Republic serials directed by William Witney and John English, the 12-part “Daredevils of the Red Circle” (issued in 1939) stands out as one of the greatest. With the original Republic materials, now held by Paramount, Kino-Lorber has released a new Blu-Ray copy of the film, which was previously only available on VHS, dating back to the 1990s.

Carnival stuntmen Charles Quigley, Herman Brix, and David Sharpe, together with their dog Tuffie (Tuffie), are embroiled in locating an escaped convict named Harry Crowell (Charles Middleton), who goes by the number 39013 instead of his given name. Out of spite, he creates a double of his previous prison cell and locks up his former business partner Horace Granville (Miles Mander). Since Republic had the BEST costume and make-up in the business, his disguise is spot on, and he even manages to sound like a prisoner. He’s actively working to ruin his ex-business partner’s financial holdings. The master criminal looks amused by Blanche Granville’s (Carole Landis) success in convincing the guy pretending to be her grandpa to hire the three Daredevils to assist apprehend 39013. He intends to wipe off the Daredevils, but curiously signed messages from “The Red Circle” have been reaching them, telling them to beware.

Fast-paced action, excellent visual effects from the Lydecker brothers, and tense, exciting music from William Lava are all hallmarks of serials directed by the Witney-English duo. With the help of C. Montague Shaw’s Doctor Malcolm, Charles Middleton’s menacing presence keeps the purportedly convalescing elderly man at arm’s length from anybody who could see through his disguise. As a fan of serials, I appreciate the “industrial plant” sections, which don’t feel too repetitive when read with a day or more in between episodes. The “domestic” role of Fred “Snowflake” Toones is not likely to sit well with many modern viewers, albeit standard for its period and not utilized too often, and the storyline has more than a few holes, some of which are not entirely covered by the quick action. There is some great comedy in the pursuit and battle scenes, but the Witney-English duo did not do very well with “comic” characters.

The Blu-ray from Kino-Lorber boasts a resolution of 1920 x 1080p and was created “from a 4K scan.” It has a good amount of sharpness, a decent grayscale, and barely any dirt or scratches. Some areas were compromised due to flawed negatives or questionable secondary sources. These flaws are more noticeable than they were on VHS due to the higher resolution, but the copy is still fairly clean. The framing is improved in the horizontal direction, displaying the full 1.37:1 aspect ratio, while the vertical is about the same as the VHS, with the circle in the chapter titles slightly clipped on top and bottom, and the actors pictured during the recap text are missing the tops of their heads, or hats anyhow. No problem of that kind in the rest of the film; it is possible the titles are from a different source, which would also explain how, in an otherwise carefully made transfer, Chapter Five got the wrong MPPDA certificate number, 5210 from Chapter Six. There were three discrepancies between this and the VHS version, but this one was corrected. There is a lot more high-frequency information and very little noise, and there are no audibly distracting “noise reduction” artifacts, thus the audio is a significant improvement over the VHS recording.

The only “extra feature” is audio commentary from film historian Michael Schlesinger, which can be heard with Chapters One, Four, Nine and Twelve, providing good background information. However, unlike the Republic serials released by Olive Films, subtitles are not included here, nor can you find the “trailers” promised by the packaging.

In an authentically sourced edition on modern video formats, derived from fresh transfers of the original materials, we now have one of the “classic” Republic serials from the Witney-English era. The release’s small flaws don’t take away from the overall quality, therefore I won’t be joining the ranks of critics who gave it less than five stars.
